A night of Far Eastern Music and Dance in Margaretsville

David O’Leary, theatre manager, had a dream… to one day bring classical Indian music and dance to the stage of the Evergreen Theatre in Margaretsville. Last Friday that dream came true when Vineet Vyas, Bageshree Vaze and Ron Allen, accompanied by special guest Vijay Vyas performed there, presented by Debut Atlantic. It was an interesting, excitingly colourful evening, full of stories, exotic rhythms from the tablas, songs and music from flute and harmonium and beautiful dancing. Go straight to the photograph gallery of the performance here or read on for more about the performance. (NB. The music playing over the gallery is not by the group.)

The music which was mainly from North India gave us a wonderful taste of that style and showed how skillfully a human voice can be used as a musical instrument, to float between specific notes in a melody that enhances and is enhanced by the rhythmic tablas and the gentle low wooden flute – almost a musical echo.

Bageshree Vaze

The second half of the performance featured Vineet Vyas’ father Vijay on harmonium, with Bageshree dancing.

You can see the gallery of photographs of the night here.

Sadly there is none of their exotic music with this gallery, but I have included a track of world music for ambiance!

Bruce Guthro and Son Dylan at the Evergreen

Bruce Guthro and his son Dylan performed to a packed house at the Evergreen Theatre in Margaretsville a couple of weeks ago. Anyone who has seen Bruce perform live knows that his concerts are wonderful, and this was no exception, especially in the intimate setting of this venue. See the gallery of this performance here or read on for more about the performance.

Bruce Guthro

Time doesn’t permit me to write in detail about this show, although I must mention that it was a great pleasure to see Dylan, Bruce’s son, performing so capably with his father and seeming to be so at ease and natural on stage. The duo sang and played to the appreciative audience, including some material co-written between them.

You can see the gallery of photographs of the performance and hear a track entitled “Be Still” from Bruce’s CD “Beautiful Life” here.

Thanks Bruce and Dylan for the great concert and for your appreciative comments about the photographs.

“Underneath the Lintel” at the Evergreen Theatre

The stage presented an exciting sight to Evergreen Theatre goers when they arrived at the venue last Sunday. The play “Underneath the Lintel” presented by Frankie Productions and featuring Christian Murray was a departure from our musical performances. See the photo gallery of the production here or read on for more about the performance.

Christian Murray

“Underneath the Lintel or The Mystery of the Abandoned Trousers”, written by Glen Berger was directed by Mary Vingoe. The excellent set was designed by Stephen Osler and the Lighting Design and Technical Direction was by Ingrid Risk. This talented team gave Christian Murray a perfect platform for his performance.

The play which was 75 minutes in length portrayed a librarian (Christian) who finds a book that is 113 years overdue returned to the library. We are all with him as his sleuthing leads him on a trail that takes him many exciting places, both physically and emotionally. We share in his triumphs and his disappointments as Christian builds his character through the story. This is a performance that is not to be missed and we were so glad to have had the chance to see and photograph it.

You can see the gallery of photographs of the play here.

Thanks to all who helped in putting on this wonderful performance for us in Margaretsville that night.
