Erin Costelo – the Tapestry tribute

Erin Costelo’s outstanding tribute to Carol King’s iconic Tapestry album gave the Evergreen Theatre audience a truly memorable evening. She began the set alone with a few of her own songs and then her band joined her and the already fine performance went up another notch. Here is the link to the performance image gallery with a track entitled “The Birds That Wake the Day” from Erin’s recent recording “Fire & Fuss” playing over it.

Erin really did more than do justice to these songs, singing them with her own style, but staying true to the spirit of the original recordings, giving so many of us (who could remember) the feeling of being back in the days. It was a joy to hear them.

Thanks Erin and band. We hope to see you back again soon!

Tanya Davis wove her poetry through the strings of her guitar

Tanya Davis is a poet and a singer who absolutely won the hearts of the audience at the Evergreen Theatre. The confident singer songwriter Zac Crouse opened for her with his compositions on the banjo and Tanya joined him for several of his songs. Here is the link to the Tanya Davis and Zac Crouse performance image gallery with a track entitled “Don’t Bury Me” from Tanya’s recent recording “Clocks and Hearts Keep Going” playing over it.

Honestly, I could have listened to Tanya’s beautiful performance all night, as she so skillfully wove her poetry through the strings of her guitar creating a beautiful harmony of thought and music.

Tanya Davis and Zac Crouse were a great evening’s entertainment thanks to the wonderful “Bringing it Home” program sponsored by Music Nova Scotia. Thank you both so much!

First Evergreen show of the season – Old Man Luedecke – full house!

The start of the Evergreen Theatre season is one of the first signs of Spring and accompanied by just as much excitement. This year the opening show featured Old Man Luedecke who is a winning performer, both of awards and of hearts and sold out very quickly. Here is the link to the Old Man Luedecke image gallery with a track entitled “My Love Comes Stepping up the Stairs” from his Juno nominated album “My Hands are on Fire” playing over it. Read on for my take on the show.

This show was a terrific opener for the 2011 season. Old Man Luedecke has been nominee and winner of Juno Award(s) and an Indie music award. He lives his life accompanied by music and a banjo, which we all got a chance to share in on that night. His humour is contagious and he brings a great sense of joy as he examines aspects of life we have all experienced in such songs as ‘At the Airport’ and the song featured over the album, which is a personal favourite of mine. Always a popular performer, this down to earth singer songwriter with the hands on fire on his banjo and guitar was the perfect start to a very promising year of events.

Ashley Condon was featured at the Canadian Deep Roots 2010 Music Festival and so we were very excited to be able to see her play at the Evergreen. This confident performer sang several tracks from her Music Nova Scotia award nominated CD “Come in From the Cold”, including Already Come, Baby Brown Eyes and A New Heart, as well as an animated version of The Neighbours ain’t Home. Her strong, clear and bright voice filled the venue and delighted the audience, many of whom were hearing her for the first time.

Old Man Luedecke and Ashley Condon gave us a wonderful start to what promises to be an excellent 2011 season at the Evergreen Theatre, thank you both so much!
