Matt Minglewood – the Blues at the Evergreen!

Matt Minglewood’s return to the Evergreen Theatre was eagerly anticipated by all those who had seen him on his last visit in 2006 and more, as two sold out shows testify. (This makes every show so far this season a sellout!)

This singer songwriter, native of Cape Breton, has been on the music scene for over 30 years but his performance has the passion and energy that keeps his audiences coming back for more and they were definitely NOT disappointed on those nights!. See the photo gallery of the performance here or read on for my impressions of the performance.

Matt Minglewood

Matt kicked off with his award winning “Me and the Boys” from 1986 and took us through many songs from his latest CD “The Story”, including a great Boogie Woogie on the piano, “Eight Good Reasons” and several from a new album that he is working on, including “You only got yourself to Blame”. It was a fantastic night of the Blues accompanied at times by bottleneck on his “Big Red” guitar. If you meet him, get him to tell you the tale of this venerable guitar and an old school bus…

In the intermission Matt signed CDs, photographs and even LPs that fans had brought that looked well played and loved from his earliest days.

He sang the heart-rending Rita MacNeil song “Working Man”, speaking for miners around the world, and the ironic “Ain’t Nothin Pretty” (About the Blues) as well as his great train song – “Blue River Train” (did you know that there were more songs written about trains than almost any other theme?) One of the favourites with the audience was his passionate rendition of “Keep Your Head Down, You’re in Kandahar” that was written after his first visit to that region to entertain the troops.

View the gallery of images here. This gallery features a track “How High is High Enough?” from his CD “Live at Last”.

To sell out the Evergreen Theatre is great! To sell out two nights is fantastic. Matt Minglewood did just that. Thanks for a great night, Matt!
